According to an article in the Financial Times, 2013 has seen a return of foreign investment in Spain’s and Barcelona’s property market for the first time since the start of the crisis in 2008.
With mortgage lending down drastically, Spaniards are finding it difficult to manoeuvre within the current property market, but several large deals by foreign private equity groups have recently been concluded. A series of moves by the Spanish government aimed at curing the recent ills of the property market has “encouraged lenders to begin selling off assets at prices low enough to tempt foreign investors back to the negotiation table…”

The Financial Times also cites evidence that more conservative investors are showing an interest in Spanish property, with deals expected to increase significantly over the next year.
Real estate prices in Madrid and Barcelona for both commercial and residential property are still much lower than in London or Paris, says the FT.
